The County is working with NeighbourWoods North and other partners to plant trees, As part of the Going Green in Grey climate change action plan, a multi-year naturalization project is underway on the large lawn in front of the Grey County Headquarters Building on 9th Avenue in Owen Sound.

Shrubs, and pollinator plants - along with a rain garden on the property. This is a demonstration project to support more biodiversity, absorb water from heavy rainfalls and reduce emissions from lawn mowing.

Grey County, NeighbourWoods North and others in the climate community launched the first phase of the Transform the Lawn project in fall 2022, planting a small stand of sugar maple trees with native understory shrubs alongside 6th Street East.

In 2023, a rain garden was planted at the corner of 6th Street and 9th Avenue, and a pollinator bed planted up near the county parking lot to the north of the building.

In 2024, some apple trees went in on the south side of the lawn as a nod to the most common fruit trees grown in Grey County.  The planting, mulching and pruning of these apple trees have benefited from the knowledge and expertise of Julie Anne Lamberts from the local nursery called "Rooted by the Bluffs".

In 2025, the season will launch with a work bee at the property on April 22nd to mark Earth Day.  All are welcome.  If you haven't done this kind of thing before, you can be assured you'll have fun and learn a bit.  There will be snacks so make sure to register here for planning purposes.
